Why Go to Machhakhola?
To be honest, most people have never even heard of Machhakhola until they are searching treks in the Manaslu area and that is totally fair. It is a small inconspicuous village located in Nepal’s Gorkha region. But here is the thing, this little place punches way above its weight when it comes to importance for adventure. This is the gateway to the legendary Manaslu Circuit Trek.
Machhakhola (also spelled as Machha Khola or Macchakhola) is situated at an altitude of 870 meters and is the main access point for some of the most spectacular treks in Nepal – including the renowned Manaslu Circuit Trek and the highly spiritual Tsum Valley Trek. If you are going to Manaslu region, you will most likely be coming through here first.
Machhakhola is the kind of place that feels like the edge of the world and it is in the best possible way.
Even if you do not consider yourself a serious trekker, the trip is well worth it. The road from Kathmandu winds through lush Nepalese hills along rushing rivers, through traditional mountain villages and across scenery that makes you wish, you had a better camera. It is raw, it is real and it is utterly Nepal.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek: Why Everyone Is Talking About It
You cannot talk about Machhakhola without talking about the main reason most trekkers take this route in the first place – the Manaslu Circuit Trek. And once you know what this trek is all about, everything makes perfect sense.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is among Nepal’s most spectacular and most underrated multi-day treks. It circles Mount Manaslu 8,163 m (26,781 feet), the 8th highest mountain on Earth through ancient Tibetan influenced villages, rhododendron and bamboo forests, high alpine meadows, glacial valleys and over the Larkya La Pass at 5160 meters. This is the kind of journey that changes you.
Compared to the popular Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek, the Manaslu Circuit trek is still refreshingly off the beaten track. Here you feel a million miles from the crowds, village life is more genuine and the sense of wilderness is increasingly difficult to come by anywhere in the Himalayas. The route runs through Manaslu Conservation Area where snow leopards, red pandas and more than 2,000 species of plants exist.
For all trekkers on the Manaslu Circuit, the first day of trekking is always Machhakhola. Which means every single person heading to the legendary Manaslu Circuit Trek starts their journey from Kathmandu, exactly as you are planning to.
Transportation Options from Kathmandu to Machhakhola
Bus from Kathmandu to Machhakhola
The bus journey from Kathmandu to Machhakhola is an adventure of its own. It is about 160 kilometers (99 miles) and takes between 8 and 10 hours by road, depending on the road condition, traffic and the number of stops the driver makes. On a good day, you can arrive in late afternoon but on a bad day — pack extra snacks.
The road is a tale of two halves. From Kathmandu, the first half is smooth, you are on a proper highway, rolling through the foothills, watching the city give way to countryside. But after you pass Dhading Besi, and head toward Arughat and beyond, the road degrades into a dusty, potholed off-road ride. Think rocky terrain, narrow mountain trails and roads that hug cliffs edges a little too closely for comfort.
Pro Tip: Grab a window seat on the right side of bus for the best views of the Budhi Gandaki River and surrounding hill ranges during the second half of the journey.
The bus is typically a local bus with 35 seats. Don’t expect the seats to recline or the bus to be air-conditioned – that’s old school Nepali public transportation and it has all the charms (and occasional cramped legs) of the traditional form. But honestly it is part of the experience.
There will be stops on the way for lunch and toilet and maybe for a cup of tea. These pauses are welcome relief during such a long jouirney. The timing of breaks is not strict, so carry some food and water with you for use in unexpected situations.
Jeep Options: Shared and Private
If you do not want to go via local bus for 8 to 10 hours, don’t worry there is also a Jeep option available for the Kathmandu to Machhakhola. And honestly this is the best option preferred by many trekkers.
There are two ways to go by Jeep – Shared or private. Let’s breakdown both of these:
Shared Jeep to Machhakhola
A shared jeep is the easiest and most convenient way to get to Machhakhola, and it is understand why this is the mode of transport chosen by so many travelers. You will pay for a single seat, the jeep is filled with passengers going in the same direction. Nestled Between Bus and Private Vehicle In the spectrum of transportation options available here in Nepal, the jeep sits nicely in a comfortable position It is more cost effective than hiring a private jeep, but a far better experience than jostling with strangers in the bus.
The journey by road is around 7 to 8 hours, which is much quicker than the bus. These roads are narrow and curvy at parts and a jeep is more comfortable in those conditions than a big bus. It is more spacious, the ride is less bumpy and you do not feel like you have been through a battle.
The only thing to be aware is that shared jeep leaves only when it is full. On busy days, this is rarely a problem but on slow days you might find yourself waiting longer at Gongabu Bus Park in Kathmandu. If you want a more predictable start to your trip, you can purchase your seat in advance from us. We reserve your spot in advance, so you just show up and go – no waiting, no uncertainty.
Private Jeep to Machhakhola

If you want the most convenient and flexible way to travel, booking a private jeep is the best way. The whole vehicle is for you as soon as you set out. You decide when to leave, you take your breaks whenever you want and you do not have to work around someone else’s schedule. It is a very chilled out way to travel, especially compared to cramming in with strangers on a long mountain road trip.
A private jeep is also the quickest road option, getting you there in about 6 to 7 hours. The riding experience appears to be much more comfortable as a whole with no extra stops for vehicle share.
The price is obviously higher than a shared jeep, and it is worth being upfront about that. Still, if you are travelling as a group of four or more, splitting the hire cost with the group makes the individual cost a lot more affordable than it initially might appear. For groups, the extra comfort and convenience often costs next to nothing more than the shared option.
To book your private jeep just contact us with your date of travel. We will handle everything and have a reliable vehicle and professional driver waiting for you.

Kathmandu to Machhakhola Road Condition
To be honest, the Kathmandu to Machhakhola road is not smooth, comfortable highway from the start to finish. It is a journey of two different halves and knowing what to expect before you go makes the whole experience a lot less surprising and a lot more enjoyable.
The First Half – Kathmandu to Arughat
The first half of the journey from Kathmandu to Arughat is on a proper paved highway. The road is good, the scenery is great and you will be treated to rolling hills, lush Nepalese countryside, green foothills and traditional villages at a leisurely pace. This leg is about 3 to 4 hours and it is actually a lot of fun, particularly if you have a window seat and a good playlist.
The Second Half – Arughat to Machhakhola
Beyond Arughat the tarmac finishes and the proper adventure starts. The road turns dusty and rocky and is relentlessly bumpy with tight bends hugging cliffs edges a little too closely for comfort, it is the kind of road that rattles your teeth and tests your patience. But running alongside you is the Budhi Gandaki River thundering through the valley below, making every bump on the road completely worth it. This segment lasts around 3 to 4 hours, depending on the road condition and time of season.
Best Time to Travel from Kathmandu to Machhakhola
If you are planning a trip to Machhakhola for the Manaslu Circuit Trek or the Tsum Valley Trek or even just the journey – timing is everything. The road from Kathmandu to Machhakhola is certainly not your typical highway. This is a mountain road subject to Nepal’s seasonal weather conditions which can be highly variable. Choosing the right time means a smoother ride, better road conditions and a more enjoyable overall experience.
Here is all about the best time to travel from Kathmandu to Machhakhola.
Autumn (October to November)
If you ask any experienced trekker or any of our staff at Nepal Holiday Treks and Tours and they will tell you that autumn is undoubtedly the best time to journey from Kathmandu to Machhakhola. The monsoon rains have passed, the skies are crisp and blue and the roadways are their finest of the year.
The scenery along the Budhi Gandaki River valley is absolutely breathtaking at this time – golden-hued forests, fresh mountain air and Manaslu rising tall and snow-capped on the horizon.
This is also Nepal’s trekking high season, so the trail is buzzing. Teahouses are open, provisions are fresh and the entire Manaslu zone is teeming with trekkers from around the world.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is the second best season for travelling from Kathmandu to Machhakhola and for many it is equally as stunning as autumn. The rhododendron forests along the trek explode with vivid red and pink flowers, the weather is warming and the Himalayas are still crystal clear before the pre-monsoon haze settles in.
Spring road conditions are typically excellent, especially March and through the first half of April. By May the pre-monsoon clouds are starting to form and there may be a few showers that could make the dirt parts of the road a bit slick but nothing that a good jeep cannot handle.
Winter (December to February)
Kathmandu to Machhakhola in winter is possible but it comes with some important caveats. The road is pretty much fine on the lower stretches but when you approach Machhakhola and higher elevations in the manaslu region, the temperature drops considerably and snow can block both the road and the path.
The road is ordinarily passable in winter but early morning departure in December and January can be bitterly cold, especially on an unheated local bus. A private jeep with good heating is strongly recommended for travel in winter.
Monsoon (June to September)
Let us be completely honest with you, monsoon season is a nightmare to travel from Kathmandu to Machhakhola and we generally do not recommend it for most trekkers.
Nepal’s monsoon brings heavy, relentless rainfall from June through September. The dirt road between Arughat and Machhakhola is especially affected. Landslides, flooding and roads getting washed out are frequent and can transform an 8 hour trip into a day-long nightmare or can make the road totally impassable for a number of days.
That said, the Tsum Valley Trek can be done during monsoon as the valley lies in rain shadow and receives a lot less rain. But even then, getting there is a trip requiring some planning and local knowledge.
