About Lobuche Peak – What you need to know
Lobuche Peak has two summits: Lobuche East (6,119 m) and Lobuche West (6,145 m). Our itinerary focuses on Lobuche East, which is listed as a trekking peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and is the most frequently climbed of the two.
Despite being classified as a ‘trekking peak’, Lobuche East demands genuine mountaineering skills. The upper section involves steep ice and mixed terrain, requiring the use of crampons, an ice axe, fixed ropes, and a harness. The summit ridge is exposed and narrow, but the views from the top are among the most spectacular in the entire Himalayan range.
Technical Details of Lobuche East:
- Summit Elevation: 6,119m (20,075 ft)
- Classification: Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) Peak
- Gradient: 45 – 55 degrees on the upper summit ridge
- Climbing Style: Alpine style from High Camp
- First Ascent: 1984 by a Polish expedition
- Equipment Required: Crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, carabiners, ropes (provided)
Submitting Lobuche Peak East (6,119m)
This is the moment that separates this trek from every other adventure in the Himalayas. It is well before dawn on summit day, you put on your crampons, take hold of your ice axe and start up the steep ridge of Lobuche Peak East under a sky absolutely teeming with stars. The final ascent to the summit (6,119m) is demanding, technical and intensely personal. And then you are there on top of a Himalayan peak, staring out at a 360-degree vista of some of the highest mountains in the world Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Pumori. They all stretch out in front of you like a living map to the roof of the world. There are very few moments in life that feel like this one.
Summit day on Lobuche Peak East starts well before the sun rises. You will leave High Camp at around 2:00 AM, crampons biting into the hard-packed snow, carrying your ice axe as you steadily make your way up through the silent blackness toward the 6,119 m summit.
Best Time for the Everest Base Camp Trek with Lobuche Peak
The right timing makes all the difference in trekking in the Himalayas. Fortunately, this journey has two ideal seasons per year, both are stunning, but in different ways.
Spring (March to May): Spring is the preferred time for many climbers and for good reason. The days are warm, the skies are usually clear and the whole route is brightened by rhododendron forests that color the slopes in deep pink and red. April and May provide the most predictable summit weather on Lobuche Peak and that is precisely why serious climbers schedule their ascents in those months. Temperatures at EBC range between -10°C to 5°C cold, but perfectly manageable with the right gears.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is equally magical and honestly our personal favorite recommendation for most trekkers. The monsoon rains have just washed the entire landscape clean, leaving behind crystal-clear mountain views and freshly green valleys. October in the Khumbu is something special – warm sunny days, crisp cool nights and some of the sharpest Himalayan panoramas you will ever witness. If you want that iconic Everest photograph, this is the season that delivers it.
If you are up for a challenge and do not mind freezing temperatures, the winter (December to February) provides an eerily still and crisp track with much lesser people. Just be ready for some serious temperatures and more difficult summit conditions at Lobuche.
We generally advise avoiding June through August – the monsoon brings heavy rain, cloud cover and slippery trails that take the joy out of every day on the mountain.
Difficulty Level and Fitness Requirements for the Everest Base Camp Trek with Lobuche Peak
We will be honest with you from the beginning – this is not an easy trek. The Everest Base Camp Trek with Lobuche Peak is considered a challenging to strenuous adventure and that rating is earned. You have to walk for six to eight hours per day on steep, rocky, uneven mountain terrain for almost two weeks, sleeping at altitudes some people would not dreamed of before the trip and then capping it all off with an authentic technical summit climb to 6,119m. It is demanding, it is challenging, it test your limits and it is totally doable – if you come prepared.
What your body needs to handle?
You do not have to be a top athlete but you have to honestly be in shape and consistent with your training. The long trekking days, the constant gain in altitude, the summit push at dawn require good cardiovascular fitness, strong legs and the mental strength to keep walking when things gets hard. If you can comfortably walk for 6 hours on back-to-back days, climb stairs without getting winded and keep a steady pace uphill with a light daypack on your back then you are heading in the right direction.
Previous Experience that helps
It is true that none of the previous mountaineering experiences are mandatory for this trek but it definitely helps. Trekkers who have done multi day high altitude treks before – preferably at altitudes higher than 3,500m or 4,000m find the acclimatization process significantly easier and enjoy the journey far more. Prior experience with crampons, ice axes or technical terrain is a bonus for the Lobuche Peak summit though our certified climbing guides will prepare you for the ascent at Base Camp.
How to prepare before you arrive?
Begin training a minimum of 3 months prior to your departure date. Concentrate on long hikes carrying a small backpack, climbing stairs, biking, swimming and general cardiovascular exercise. The stronger and fitter you are when you get to Kathmandu, the better you will feel every day on the mountain and the greater your chances of standing at the summit of Lobuche Peak with a huge smile on your face.
There are few physical challenges that are as rewarding as this trek. It is completely achievable if you have the right preparation and the right team behind you.
Lukla Flight Information – You must know
If this is your first time trek in the Everest region then you must know about the Lukla flight. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is approximately 25 to 30 minutes long and is done in small twin-otter or similar mountain planes. Flights leave early in the morning, generally at 6:00 or 7:00 AM, as this is when the mountains weather is at its calmest and most predictable.
A few things to keep in mind:
Weather is everything: Lukla flights are very weather dependent. Delays and cancellation are common, particularly during the peak seasons. This is completely normal and airlines agencies have no power over it.
Always have a buffer day: We highly recommend you not to book your international flight out of Kathmandu on the day or day after the end of your trek. One more day could make all the difference in stress levels.
Ramechhap alternative: During peak seasons like spring, most flight operate from Ramechhap Airport (a 4 to 5 hour drive from Kathmandu). We will inform you in advance if this is applicable for your departure.
Luggage limit: These Lukla flight typically allow 10kg of checked baggage and 5 kg carry on.

Important Notes
Nepal Holiday Treks and Tours Pvt. Ltd. has years of expertise in the field of Himalayan trekking and can curate unforgettable experiences for adventurers like you. In order for trekkers to have a really comfortable and pleasant Everest Base Camp Trek, we are offering different optional services as per your need.
Weather Condition during EBC Trek
The flight to Lukla is greatly dependent on fine weather and smooth conditions. In-stable changes in weather usually bring in delays or postponements that might extend your trekking program. To cater for any unforeseen interruptions, we strongly recommend additional buffer days being included into the itinerary.
For long flight delays, helicopter transfer is also possible, but this comes at an additional cost and is not included in the general trek package. While helicopters do get to fly in some instances when planes cannot, extreme weather conditions will also see them grounded. If it becomes necessary, we can arrange a helicopter charter, although this is limited and on the basis of weather, as this too can cause delays.
Your tact and wisdom in such a situation are greatly appreciated. If the flights are grounded for a long period of time, another option is to drive by car to Tham Danda—a 20-hour grueling ride—where the trek can begin. But this trail too has its difficulties, particularly in inclement weather, with the necessity of added days and patience. If it becomes impossible to trek to Everest Base Camp due to recurring weather patterns, we can offer alternative trekking routes, such as Annapurna Base Camp or Langtang Gosainkunda. Although these routes do not end at Everest, they provide beautiful scenery and a rewarding trekking experience.
We thank you for your flexibility and understanding in dealing with these uncertainties, ensuring a worthwhile experience regardless of which route is taken.

Write a ReviewEverest Base Camp Trek with Lobuche Peak – 18 Days FAQs
How many kilometers do we walk each day on this trek?
Trekking days vary between 10 and 16 kilometers according to the altitude and terrain. However, as you ascend, the trail will slow you down naturally and the distances become shorter but more difficult. In all the round trip from Lukla is about 130 kilometers (82 miles) on some of the most amazing trail in the world.
Will I have mobile network and internet access on the trail?
Better than you might expect. Ncell and Nepal Telecom both provide decent coverage through most of the Khumbu valley including Namche Bazaar, Dingboche and even near Everest Base Camp. Wi-Fi is available at most teahouses for a small fee. Do not expect Netflix speeds, but staying connected with family back home via WhatsApp is absolutely manageable throughout the trek.
Is it possible to complete this trek solo without a guide?
Technically, the EBC trail can be done on your own but we really do not recommend it for this trek. A certified climbing guide is required for the Lobuche Peak summit – for safety and permit regulations. Your guide is much more than a navigator. They are your altitude monitor, your window into culture, your emergency responder and some of the best parts of the entire experience.
How cold does it gets on this trek?
It is extremely cold, especially in the high altitude. Around Namche Bazaar the temperatures are 0°C to 15°C according to season. At night the temperature at the Everest Base Camp goes down to -5°C to 15°C. On Lobuche Peak summit day you might be at -20°C or below. Dressing in appropriate layers and packing the right gear makes all the difference — our comprehensive packing list has you completely covered.
Can the trek be done solo or is a guide required?
You can do the Everest Base Camp Trek independently; however, for Lobuche Peak, guides and support teams will be needed for safety and logistics purposes.
Are there ATMs or places to exchange money on the trek?
There are ATMs in Namche Bazaar but they are unreliable and often out of cash in high season. There are no other banking facilities on the trail beyond Namche. We strongly recommend to withdraw the Nepali Rupees you will need for personal expenses before leaving Kathmandu.
Can I my charge my electronics on the trail?
Yes, there are charging facilities in most teahouses for a small fee. Cold can kill batteries much faster than normal so a power bank is a must.
What happens if I cannot complete the trek or need to turn back?
Your safety is always our first priority. If altitude sickness, injury or fatigue makes it unsafe to go on, your guide will take action – that may mean an additional day to rest, going down to acclimatize or organizing an emergency helicopter evacuation at your own expense. It is not shameful to do the right thing for your body. The mountains are always here and so are we whenever you are ready to try again.
Can I extend my trek or add extra days to the itinerary?
Definitely and we do encourage it if your schedule allows. Additional acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar or Dingboche greatly enhance your comfort at altitude and your likelihood of successfully reaching the summit of Lobuche Peak.
Can I do this trek if I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Yes, for sure many of our trekkers are glasses or contacts users and they never had any issues. If you wear contact lenses be aware that dry mountain air and dusty trails can cause some discomfort, so carry plenty of lubricating eye drops and consider switching to glasses on particularly windy or dusty days.
