Overview

Gokyo Chola Pass trek via Everest Base Camp

The Gokyo Chola pass trek via Everest base camp is a popular and challenging trekking route that combines the stunning Everest base camp trek with a detour to the Gokyo lakes and crossing the high- altitude Chola pass. The Gokyo Chola pass offers incredible views of Himalayan peaks, pristine lakes, and an opportunity to experience the unique culture of the Sherpa people.

Everest base camp is located at an elevation of 5364 m on the south side of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. It provides breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain range. The trail passes through diverse landscapes, including dense forests, high- altitude settlements, lush valleys, and glacial moraines.

* The best time to visit

The best time to visit the Gokyo Chola pass trek via Everest base camp is during the spring (March to May) and Autum (September to November) seasons. These seasons provide the most favorable weather conditions and impressive views of the Himalayas.

Spring seasons offers generally clear and stable weather, with mild temperatures and longer daylight hours. The trails are filled with blooming rhododendron flowers and lush vegetation, making the trek even more enjoyable.

Autum months are the time of the harvest season. Leaves on the trees will turn yellow, orange, red, and brown, making the colorful hills. The high mountains are still cold and lower elevations are still warm but the day time walking temperatures are the most pleasant overall.

Winter and monsoon are less favorable for the Gokyo Chola Pass trek via Everest base camp. Winter brings cold temperatures, heavy snowfall, and limited teahouse availability whereas Monsoon season brings heavy rainfall making the path slippery, muddy, and less safe.

* Altitude sickness

While ascending quickly you may feel symptoms like nausea, headache, difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate, and uneasiness. And, if the symptoms persist for a longer duration then know that your body could not resist the altitude variation. So, if you feel these symptoms, please let your guide and your group know. Your guide will provide you with immediate first aid.

To minimize the risk of altitude sickness here are some guidelines:

Stop and rest where you are

 Do not go any higher for at least 24 to 48 hours

 Make sure you are drinking enough water

 Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or exercise

* Accommodation and Foods

During the trek, teahouses usually provide basic room with a bed and shared bathroom facilities. The beds have mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, and some blankets. Hot water is available for some additional charge. Most hotels now have geyser, otherwise you will get a bucket of warm water.

Tea shops and lodges provide plentiful and delicious foods to suit the preferences of various trekkers. All the food will be cooked by the local cook by using local vegetables so the taste would be very local. However, the many teahouses provide food with Nepali, Indian, Italian, Tibetan, and continental flavors.

    Gokyo Cho-La pass Trek via Everest Base Camp

    My stay in Nepal and the trekking tour via Namche Bazar to Kala Patthar as well as via Cho La Pass to Gokyo and back to Lukla was a wonderful and unforgetable experience thanks to Nepal Holiday Trek and Tours. The tour was very well organised and everybody was very friendly and helpful. I had an exellent guide with a long experience who explained a lot in good English. He also made sure that I could carefree enjoy the fantastic nature (e.g. with calling at tea houses to reserve rooms prior to our arrivel). Talking about nature, the scenery on this tour is truely stunning: high mountains, glaciers, green valleys, clear rivers, breathtaking views. Sadly I stumbled over some hidden piles of rubbish in the middle of nowhere and with some distance to villages. So to all the trekkers out there: Please avoid buying plastic bottles (tap water can easily be treated) and take your rubbish out of the beautiful mountains (rubbish thrown in bins at tea houses might end up on those piles). I warmly recommend booking this tour with Nepal Holiday Trek and Tours.

    EBC + Gokyo treek

    I booked my trek to EBC with Nepal Holiday Treks and Tours. Thanks to Ramesh for arranging everything and making my trekking experience great. He arranged us a porter (Prem) who carried a lot of weight on his back and never complained. During the trek Ramesh checked up on us to see if we were doing ok.
