Makalu Base Camp Trekking

Mount Makalu is known for its dazzling beauty, which is located in Sankhuwasabha District in the koshi zone of north- eastern Nepal. It is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8481 meters (27,825 ft). Makalu base camp trek is one of the most glorious adventure destinations around the Himalayan region, between the high peaks of Kanchenjunga towards the east with Mt. Everest in the west direction. 

Makalu is an isolated peak which is shaped like a four- sided pyramid. The name Makalu is derived from the Sanskrit Maha Kala, a name for the Hindu god Lord Shiva that translates “Big Black.” The Chinese name for the peak is Makaru. Makalu was first climbed by a French team on May 15, 1995. Around 500 people have climbed the mountain. To date, there have been a total of 206 successful ascends of Makalu and a total of 22 fatalities. The difficulty of trekking a mountain trail usually depends on the altitude its lies. It also depends on the time it takes to climb the mountain. In spite of the fact that, the trail is difficult but you will enjoy the amazing scenery of mountains, and green hills on walk towards Makalu base camp where the adventure leads you from low warm sub- tropical temperatures of Arun valley to cooler alpine areas with high hills and into scenic Barun valley.

Makalu Barun Valley is a Himalayan glacier valley situated at the base of Makalu in the Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal. This valley lies entirely inside the Makalu Barun National Park. Furthermore, Makalu Barun National Park and Buffer Zone Area (previously conservation area) was established in 1992. It is extended over Solukhumbhu and Sankhuwasabha districts. This park is administered and managed by Department of National parks and wildlife conservation.

Barun valley is a paradise for naturalists and as well for trekkers where 47 species of orchids and 67 species of valuable medicinal and aromatic plants are found with 25 of Nepal’s and 30 varieties of rhododendron, 19 species of bamboo, including 400 different species of bird life with a rare and elusive wild animal from musk deer to snow leopards.

1) Foods and Accommodation

Nepali Dal Bhat is a chief dish with fresh green vegetables curry. The tea houses and lodges provide meals, which are often a mix of Nepalese and western cuisine. There are also vegetarian choices. Makalu trek offers you traditional meals such as momos (steamed dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and tsampa (roasted barley flour) etc are available.

5) Best season for Makalu base camp trek

The spring season (March to May) is one of the ideal seasons to travel to Makalu base camp since the weather is often clear and warmth, with moderate day time (20°C to 25°C) temperatures and milder night time (-5°C to -10°C) temperatures. The sky is normally clear, and there is little possibility of rain or snow, making for excellent hiking conditions and breathtaking vistas of the mountains peak and surrounding environment. Around this season, rhododendron and other wildflowers bloom, adding to the natural beauty of the region.

The autum season (September to November) is also a good time to trek to Makalu base camp because the weather is often stable and clear, with dry conditions (15°C to 20°C) and warm temperatures. The sky is frequently clear, providing excellent views of the mountains and surrounding environment, and the paths are in good shape. 

6) Altitude sickness

Altitude sickness is common in mountains above the altitude of 3000m. Headache, nausea, tiredness etc are the symptoms occur when your body tries to adjust to the lower air pressure and lower oxygen level. Here are some things you can do to prevent yourself from getting altitude sickness.

Stop and rest where you are

Do not go any higher for at least 24 to 48 hours

Make sure you are drinking enough water

Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or exercise

Eating foods and drinking fluids that contain carbs such as bread, pasta, fruits, milk, rice, and so on.

Trip Itinerary

Our personnel will be waiting for you at the airport with your name on a placard. He will pick you up from airport and transfer you to the hotel as per your preference. This day will be for your refreshment and in the evening you will be provided a guided evening walk to the local markets as well as localities to make you familiar with the Nepalese atmosphere.

We will be providing you a half day guided sightseeing tour to different UNESCO listed world heritage sites in Nepal with one of our best tour guides and the destinations includes Boudhanath the largest of all Buddhist monument stupas in Nepal, Swayambhunath the monkey temple and also the oldest one of its kind, Pashupatinath the Hindu temple of lord Shiva. We will stay overnight at the same hotel in Kathmandu.

We will be heading to Tumlingtar taking a flight for around 50 minutes from Kathmandu and then take a 3 to 4 hours drive to reach Chichira which is a small Gurung settlement where we will be staying for overnight.

We will begin our trek early in the morning; walking through the beautiful village as well as the mountain lush forest which will be heading to Num (1,560m/5119ft) after walking for around 6 to 7 hours.

The trekking path of today is steep as we descend through the forest and terraced farms to reach Barun River. We will have to cross the river and again walk along the valley to enter Makalu Barun National park and will stay overnight at Seduwa (1,500m/4922 ft) after a descent walk of around 6 to 7 hours.

We will be ascending on this day though a ridge at Ipsuwa Khola on the west and Kasuwa Khola on the east. We will walk for around 4 to 5 hours to reach Tashi Gaon (2,100m/6890ft) observing the breathtaking views of Himalayas.

Our trekking will become a little tough today as we will be walking through steep trail situated at a high altitude. We should be climbing stone stairs and a small lake to reach Khongma danda (3,500m/11,483 ft) walking for around 6 to 7 hours.

As our body needs some time to settle up with the higher altitude; we will have to take some rest in Khongma Danda for this particular day.

We will begin to climb towards the summit of the Shipton La (pass) which takes a few hours to reach. After the lake Kalo Pokhari (3930m), pass over the Keke La at 4,170m.  We can see the marvelous views of Chamlang (7321m), Peak 6 (6,524m) and Peak 7 (6,758m). After crossing the Keke La pass, we descend through the beautiful valley to Dobate.

We will be hiking through the rhododendron forest which will be leading us to the Barun River. We will continue to walk on a steep trail as we arrive at Yangri Kharka (3,557m/11,670 ft) walking for around 6 to 7 hours.

On this day we will walk through the yak pastures, lush forest and as the valley ends we pass Merek to make our way to Langmale Kharka (4,410m/14,468ft) observing the magnificent Himalayan scenarios for around 5 to 6 hours.

We will begin our begin our trekking from Langmale Kharka to reach Makalu base camp (4,870m/15,978ft) walking for around 6 to 7 hours along the views of Mount Makalu and Himalayan panorama.

We will be hovering around Makalu Base Camp area to observe the magnificent and panoramic views of lakes and mountains like Everest, Lhotse and some glaciers too.

After having the full sightseeing of the area in Makalu Base Camp we will make our way back to Yangri Kharka descending down for about 6 to 7 hours.

We will again descend on this day on rocky trails and enjoying the greenery of the forest present at our way following the trail made by River Barun to reach Dobate walking for around 6 to 7 hours.

The trekking will be adventurous as we climb steep trail from Dobate to Mumbuk and throughout the forest of firs and rhododendron. We will walk for around 5 to 6 hours to reach Khongma Danda.

The trek continues with frequent long and steep descent cutting through the hillsides. The trail takes us through thick forests and finally making it to the indigenous Sherpa village of Tashigaon after walking for around 4-5 hours.

Today we will be leaving Makalu Barun National Park as we descend down to the Barun River and cross some small villages and hills to reach Seduwa walking for around 4 to 5 hours.

We will begin our early morning trek from Seduwa to Reach Num walking for around 5 to 6 hours passing some Sherpa villages and forest.

Again we retrace our footsteps to Chichira from where we can savor the glorious vista of Mount Makalu for the last time. The final return leg of the trek will see us overnight at Tumlingtar, ready for an early departure to Kathmandu the following day.

We will be boarding a fifty minutes flight for Kathmandu as this is the ending of our trekking journey. We can rest and relax throughout the day at our hotel.
