Kanchenjunga North and South base camp trek
The ‘King of the Mountains’ or Kanchenjunga (8586m) is the third highest mountain in the world, located in the eastern Himalayans on the border between Sikkim state, north eastern India, and eastern Nepal 46 miles (74km) north-northwest of Darjiling, Sikkim. It is also known by different names in different regions. The name Kan-mean head, Chen-mean belly and Jungha-mean knee. So if you can clearly view this three top at the same time, you could see that Buddha is sleeping. That’s why this hill is also known as sleeping Buddha. In Nepal it is also known as Kumbhkaran Lungu.
Kanchenjunga is the best and popular trekking region which provides different opportunities to the trekkers. The diverse and fascinating landscapes passes through a Conservation area of wide variety of flora and fauna, river valleys, waterfalls, and high passes. Here is an abundant variety of wildlife the elasive snow leopard, the Asian black bear, and red panda, and some of the more rare mammals. Bird lovers may get the chance to see the golden-breasted fulvetta, snow cock, and blood pheasant among others. Furthermore, on the trail at the foothills of mountains, where the temperature is moderate, vegetation such as temperate forest, scrubland, tundra is seen. Similarly you can also witness mountain habitat animals such as black bears, wolves, mountains goats, elk etc. In Kanchenjunga Conservation area, you can explore deciduous oaks, maples, laurels, and briches intersperse with evergreen firs, mangouas, junipers and rhododendrons.
1) Culture and people
Kanchenjunga is culturally rich. It is located in the northeast part of Nepal, it reflects mostly Tibetan culture. It houses various, particularly the Lepchas, Sherpas, Tamang, Rai, and Limbu. They all live with their own culture, traditions, and occupations. The ethnicity of this area also shares a lot of common culture with people in Sikkim of India. Here you can enjoy variety of cultures and meet with warm- hearted local peoples. Moreover, the Tibetan Buddhist villages, monasteries, and prayer flags adds real flavor to the trek.
2) Weather and Climate
The ideal weather and climate to trek the Kanchenjunga base camp is at spring and autum season. The weather is clear and you can enjoy clear views of the mountains and the natural scenery. The lower region will be warmer and hot compared to the upper region in the mountains where temperature may drop to minus 25 degrees. The normal temperature in the winter is below 15 degrees.
3) Guide and Porter
Being a strenuous trek it is recommended it should be undertaken with a highly trekking experience, well-trained, authorized government license holder and a good level of fitness guide and a porter. They are familiar with the geography, flora and fauna of the region, and they know the best routes and place to camp. They can often spot potential hazards before they become an issue.

4) Altitude Sickness
Normally altitude sickness occurs when you travel to a high altitude too quickly. Headache, nausea, tiredness etc are the symptoms occur when your body tries to adjust to the lower air pressure and lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. Here are some things you can do to prevent yourself from getting altitude sickness.
Stop and rest where you are
Do not go any higher for at least 24 to 48 hours
Make sure you are drinking enough water
Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or exercise
Eating foods and drinking fluids that contain carbs such as bread, pasta, fruits, milk, rice, and so on.
5) Foods
Foods are very basic in Kanchenjunga. Dal bhat and Thukpa are the most common foods. You can have fresh green vegetables from the field. At some of the places you can have momo, macaroni, and pasta. Also, they might have fresh goat meat.
6) Accommodation
Similarly, Kanchenjunga trek is a teahouse trek. So, accommodations are very basic in the mountain. All the accommodations are twin- shared basis in the seasons due to limited tea houses.
