Tamang Heritage Trekking

The tamang heritage trekking is a mostly visited touristic destination in Langtang region, lies between the two mighty peaks of Langtang (3500 m) and Ganesh Himal (7429 m). The trek takes you through the culturally rich tamang villages, lush forests, snow- capped mountains, pastureland, and terraced fields. It also offers unique traditional lifestyle, customs and architecture of the tamang people. Along the trail, you may encounter wildlife such as musk deer, Himalayan red panda, monkeys (langur) and various species of butterflies and birds.

The tamang people originally came from Tibet as horse traders and settled in hilly parts of Nepal (near Kathmandu valley) several hundred years ago. They have kept a distinct identity with Tibetan roots, as well as their own language. Approximately, 90% of the tamang are Buddhist and follow Buddhism. So, you will witness colorful printed Buddhist mantra cloths are put up in various places in villages and towns. Most of them follow the Chinese lunar calendar of the 12-year cycle. Sonam Lhosar is the main festival of tamang people, which falls in the month of Magh (February- March) and celebrated to welcome the tamang new year. Similarly, they also celebrate Buddha Jayanti, a religious festival based on birthday of Gautam Buddha.

Necessary Permits for Tamang Heritage Trekking

The tamang heritage trekking lies in the Langtang region. So, to trek in this region, you need to obtain a Langtang National Park entry Permit and a TIMS (Trekker’s Information Management System) card. Both the permits can be obtained in Kathmandu from trekking agencies or at the entry point of the national park.

Any trek in Nepal, including the tamang heritage trekking, demands travel insurance. When buying travel insurance, ensure that it covers high- altitude trekking and other unexpected emergency. Additionally, you may also obtain the additional coverage of other activities like hiking, mountaineering, and adventure sports. Altitude Sickness

Normally altitude sickness occurs when you travel to a high altitude too quickly. Here are some things you can do to prevent yourself from getting altitude sickness.

 Stop and rest where you are

 Do not go any higher for at least 24 to 48 hours

Do not smoke, drink alcohol or exercise

Foods and Lodging

Nepalese Dal Bhat, is a common dish with organic and healthy fresh green vegetable curry. Tea shops and lodges provide meals, which are often a mix of Nepalese and western cursine. You can also try Dhendo, Gundruk and pickles. You will enjoy the Variety of delicious foods during the trek.

The accommodation is modest, generally with twin beds in a shared room. There may be common rooms at some tea houses where you may rest and socialize with other trekkers.

Best Season

Mainly, all the season is suitable for trekking in Nepal. But, spring (March to May) and autum (September to November) is the best season in terms of weather and view. Spring is a season of flower bloom and new leaf start to grow. The environment becomes green which give you fresh air and pleases your eyes. Similarly, autum is the festive season. One can enjoy the Nepalese festivals and know its importance. Temperature is neither too hot nor cold which fits for trekking. However, winter is also suitable for tamang heritage as the views are likely to be visible at this time.
