Trip Information

Overview

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu (1,400m) to Kyirong Border (2,700m) (145 km) – 6 to 7 hours

We will have breakfast and hit the road early, since it is a long drive ahead. The highway out of Kathmandu winds through some really pretty hill country before climbing toward the border. Once we are at Kyirong, we will get the immigration paperwork sorted and head into town to settle in for the night. Take it easy this evening, your body is already starting to adjust the altitude.

Day 02: Kyirong (2,700m) to Tingri (4,300m) (265 km) - 5 to 6 hours

Breakfast first, then we are back on the road toward Tingri. This is where Tibet really starts to feel different, wide open plateau, big skies and if the weather is clear, you will spot the Himalayas in the distance for the first time. It is a noticeable jump in elevation today, so we will keep a steady pace and stop when needed. Get a good night’s sleep once we arrive.

Day 03: Tingri (4,300m) to Rongbuk (5,000m) (Everest Base Camp) to Shigatse (3,840m) – 10 to 11 hours

This is the big one. Early breakfast, then we drive up to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery on earth, sitting right in front of Everest’s north face. From there it is a short hop to Base Camp itself and honestly, no photo really prepares you for seeing the mountain up close. We will spend some time soaking it in before the long drive to Shigatse for the night. Long day but worth every minute.

Day 04: Shigatse (3,840m) to Gyantse (3,980m) to Lhasa (3,650m) – 7 to 8 hours

After breakfast we will stop in Gyantse on the way, walking through the Pelkor Chode Monastery and checking out the Kumbum Stupa, which is honestly one of the more underrated stops on this route. Then it is onward to Lhasa, watching the landscape shift as we get closer. We will roll into the city by evening and check into the hotel.

Day 05: Sightseeing Tour in Lhasa city (3,650m)

A full day in the city today, no driving, just exploring. We will start at the Potala Palace, which is even more impressive in person than in pictures, then head to Jokhang Temple, the most sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism. Afterward, we will wander down Barkhor Street where pilgrims still walk the kora and the markets are full of life. Good day to slow down and soak in Lhasa.

Day 06: Lhasa (3,650m) to Shigatse (3,840m) – 4 to 5 hours

We start heading back today. Breakfast, then a relaxed drive back to Shigatse along the same scenic highway, just enjoying the views one more time before we begin making our way out of Tibet.

Day 07: Shigatse (3,840m) to Kyirong (2,700m) – 7 to 8 hours

Longest driving day of the return leg. After breakfast we will head toward Kyirong, descending steadily and watching the plateau give way to greener terrain again. We will spend our last night in Tibet here.

Day 08: Kyirong (2,700m) to Border to Kathmandu – 6 to 7 hours

Last breakfast in Tibet, then we will head to the border for exit formalities. Once we cross back into Nepal, it is a winding drive down to Kathmandu, ending an unforgettable trip across the roof of the world.
